For many of us, face cream is the heart of our skincare routine – moisturizing, restoring, anti-aging, there’s a formula for every need. So why does even a high-quality, expensive cream sometimes seem to do nothing? Very often the problem isn’t the cream itself, but the way it’s applied. Here are five common application mistakes that stop your cream from working, and how to fix them.

1. Your Skin Isn’t Properly Cleansed
Cream can’t do its job on skin covered with makeup, sunscreen, excess sebum and dead cells. Rinsing with water – or even a quick wash with foam – is often not enough, and clogged pores aren’t always visible. The right level of cleansing depends on your skin type.
Dry skin
Dry skin is usually thinner than other types, so it needs a gentle approach: wash your face morning and evening with a mild cleanser and use a soft scrub no more than once or twice a week. On clean skin, your cream can deliver its nourishing ingredients where they’re needed.
Oily and combination skin
In addition to daily cleansing, use a purifying mask with salicylic acid, AHAs, algae, charcoal or clay once or twice a week. These masks remove dead cells and help clear pores of dirt and excess sebum.
A gentle, balanced cleanser such as our Silk Splash Foaming Face Wash removes impurities without stripping the skin, so your cream absorbs better.
2. You Skip Toner
Toner completes the cleansing step and prepares the skin for serum and cream. Think of it as a conductor: it helps active ingredients absorb more easily and work more effectively. Even after removing makeup with a cleansing oil and washing with foam, you’ll often see traces of dirt on a cotton pad soaked in toner. Don’t skip this step.
3. You Aren’t Patient or Consistent
The number one rule in skincare is consistency. Don’t believe the myth that your skin gets “tired” of a cream or “gets used to it.” Moisturizing ingredients show their effect within days, but active ingredients such as peptides need much more time: they gradually support the skin’s own renewal processes, improving firmness and elasticity from within.
Give a new cream at least 4–6 weeks of daily use before deciding whether it works for you.
4. You Apply Night Cream Right Before Sleep
Applying cream and going straight to bed – sound familiar? The jar says “night,” but that doesn’t mean you should put your cheek on the pillow a minute later and wipe half the product onto your pillowcase. Give the cream time to absorb: apply it at least 40 minutes before sleep, ideally 1.5–2 hours. This also helps prevent morning puffiness. Learn more about timing in Day Cream vs Night Cream.
5. You Apply Too Much Cream
A thick layer of cream might feel like extra care, but it doesn’t help. Your skin can only absorb a certain amount; the rest stays on the surface, mixes with sebum and pollution and can clog pores. You only need enough cream to cover your skin in a thin, even layer – about a pea-sized amount for the face. If you’ve applied too much, gently blot the excess with a tissue.
Bonus: Two More Things to Check
- The order of your products. Apply products from the lightest to the richest texture: toner, serum, eye cream, then face cream. Sunscreen always goes last in the morning.
- The cream’s shelf life. Check the period-after-opening symbol on the package (for example, 6M or 12M) and store your cream away from heat and direct sunlight. Expired creams lose their effectiveness.
